FiveThirtyEight aggregate polling showed Trump was polling at 53 per cent, versus DeSantis’s 16 per cent. None of the other candidates in the crowded field poll over 6 per cent.in June found that 76 per cent surveyed thought the indictment over retaining classified documents was “politically motivated”, while 12 per cent thought the documents were a “national security risk”. Eighty per cent of these voters thought Mr Trump should still be president if he is convicted over the document charges.
Following the indictment, some of Mr Trump’s backers have labelled the latest charges as politically motivated.Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who represents Georgia’s 14th District, said: “My support for President Trump is unwavering. We know that this is a phony and politically motivated witch hunt aimed at undermining the core values of our nation. The American people see through these actions, and together we must stand.
Yesterday Jack Smith, special counsel, who oversaw the investigations into Mr Trump, said: “The attack on our nation’s capitol on 6 January, 2021 was an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy. “As described in the indictment, it was fueled by lies,” Mr Smith said, “Lies by the defendant, targeted at obstructing a bedrock function of the US government.”
If Mr Trump wins the 2024 election, it is possible he could pardon himself. This issue is untested under the US constitution and it is likely the Supreme Court would have to intervene.
