Thanks to the Salvation Army’s annual toy distribution effort to help struggling families, more than 2,100 Elgin-area children will find Christmas presents under the tree this year.
More than 965 parents signed up for the program, and came to the Salvation Army Corps center in Elgin this week to collect the gifts and holiday food boxes.“The expression of gratitude of parents assures us this will bring joy to so many children,” said Capt. Rich Forney, who oversees the Elgin corps. “It’s such a good feeling.”
This year has been a struggle because her money’s gone to diapers, clothes and food, the prices of which keep going up, Arregondo said. The toy giveaway brought her some “peace knowing someone is willing to help give to children when parents can’t afford it,” she said. There was a big increase in the number of families needing help this year, which posed a challenge, said Rick Reigner, resource development director for the Elgin corps.
Donations from Blain’s Farm and Fleet, Weck Auto Group, which owns Elgin Kia, and FedEx helped fill families’ wish lists, he said.
