Artist Youssef Daoudi and poet Adrian Matejka hope new graphic biography 'gives voice' new to famed boxer Jack Johnson

“The idea from the get-go was to find a voice,” Daoudi says. “It’s a voice for Jack Johnson, but also the century’s voice, the epoch’s voice — all the things that made his era interesting. I think it’s important for us all to try to understand the history because it informs the ever-shifting times we live in.”The idea first started to take shape more than a decade ago. Matejka, the editor of Poetry magazine, published “The Big Smoke” in 2013.

Matejka points out that Johnson’s 68 years covered two world wars and several revolutions; a devastating hurricane in the boxer’s native Galveston and a pandemic; technological advances abounded … the telephone, the automobile, the airplane. Youssef Daoudi is the artist for"Last on His Feet," a graphic novel about the life and career of Jack Johnson, a Galveston native and heavyweight champion. The book was a collaboration between Daoudi and poet Adrian Matejka. The poet and the artist found their work to be particularly interactive. Rather than images requiring text or text awaiting images, they found themselves constantly navigating the narrative and inserting new images or poems to make the story flow.

They sought to undo previous portrayals of Johnson as a country bumpkin who punched his way to renown amid a life of salacious excesses.
