Owner has resigned himself to the fact he can no longer operate the historic home at 429 W. Downer Place he’s owned since 1972, but wants to make sure tenants find new spots to live.

Longtime Aurora educator and landlord Jerry Skinner is worried about finding new homes for his boarding house tenants, now that the deadline to comply with new regulations the city of Aurora passed five years ago has come and gone. The longtime Aurora landlord, who spent four decades in special education, has resigned himself to the fact he can no longer operate the historic home at 429 W.

Skinner also was principal of Hope Wall School for a year and worked for a short time in private special education. But throughout that entire career, he continued to be a landlord and insists that, up until this year, “I never had any major issues with the city.” Skinner describes the home at 429 W. Downer as “special.” It was built in 1860 by Irishman D. W. Hurd, a druggist, when he moved here from New York City with his family, according to Aurora Historical Society Executive Director John Jaros.

Skinner, who describes the house as “like an old European hotel with rooms on each side of the halls,” resided for 20 years on the bottom floor, which he said was restored to historical preservation standards. He also served a term on Aurora’s Preservation Commission and is proud of the fact that one of his properties received a preservation award under Mayor David Pierce.
