Ribble Valley hotel says it had 'no choice' but to host far right group's northern conference
A Ribble Valley hotel at the centre of a row involving a far-right political group said it had "little practical alternative" but to host its annual conference.
Among those pictured in an event photo shared by Patriotic Alternative is Mark Collett, a leading figure within the group who previously worked as publicity officer for the British National Party . Mr Collett first came to public attention is 2002 when he was covertly filmed admitting his admiration for Adolf Hitler and describing AIDS as a “friendly disease” because “blacks, drug users and gays have it" in Channel 4 documentary Young, Nazi And Proud.
The group's spokesperson, Allan Jones, said that by hosting the event the hotel had provided a "safe space" for the "abhorrent views" to go unchallenged and called for the hotel to clarify whether it sympathised with the Patriotic Alternative.
On Friday morning, the anonymous call was made asking for information and explaining that he believed an event was being hosted in the area and would have been under something innocuous sounding such as a book event. Further call followed through the course of the day. "Having regard to all the circumstances, the proximity of the event and having explored all legal options, the hotel was left with little practical alternative but to proceed with the booking, which had been accepted by the hotel many months prior, in good faith, and before the hotel’s management had any knowledge of these serious allegations."

Liberal Rhode Island Could Send Republican to US HouseIn liberal Rhode Island, Republican Allan Fung stands a chance of flipping a U.S. House seat and possibly helping his party gain control of the chamber. U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine is the one Republican in New England’s congressional delegation. Fung saw an opportunity to break the Democratic Party’s three-decade hold on a seat when longtime Rhode Island Democratic Rep. Jim Langevin announced his retirement this year. Many political observers say the race is either a tossup or think Fung may have a slight edge over Democrat Seth Magaziner. Democrats up for election nationally face headwinds because of inflation.
