Lance McCullers Jr. won't be ready for season opener because of muscle strain
Karen Warren/Staff photographerWEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Lance McCullers Jr. will not be ready for opening day after an MRI on his elbow revealed a “small muscle strain” that will shut him down for at least a few weeks.
McCullers called the diagnosis a “best case scenario” after undergoing his MRI on Tuesday night. The imaging did not reveal any structural damage, McCullers said, and his surgically-repaired ulnar collaterla ligament looked"good." He is hopeful to start playing catch “in a couple weeks.” “Opening day is out of the question,” McCullers said on Wednesday. “Because of the nature of building up through spring and the amount of bullpens you need and live you need and obviously games, the smartest thing would be to just go at a slow pace and come back and still have the ability to throw the majority of a full season.”
McCullers missed five months last season with a strained flexor muscle, but returned in September to throw 47 ⅔ innings and slot third in Houston’s playoff rotation. McCullers underwent Tommy John surgery in Nov. 2018. “I’ve been a little bit upset. I was really looking forward to a great start to the camp and a great start to the season. Any time this happens, it’s very frustrating for me, our team and our fanbase. I just wanted to have a great year and get off to a great start and unfortunately that didn’t happen.”
