Nearly 1000 homes are to be knocked down and replaced in the next five-year phase of the council's housing project

Eight Lanarkshire towers are among nearly 1000 homes to be demolished in the latest stage of a major council housing project.

The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories, and allows you to customise your page to the sections that matter most to you.Airbles, Albion, Anderson and Oakfield Towers each have 67 homes and Whamond Tower, which is specifically designated for tenants aged over 60, has 66 homes and nearby low-rise McClurg Court contains 56 flats.

The decision means vacant properties across all the phase two blocks will no longer be let out and non-essential internal works will no longer be carried out, although council officials have assured residents that they will “continue to maintain all homes and communal facilities to existing high standards”.

Residents were consulted through surveys, open days, newsletters and site visits, with 68 per cent of those returning responses expressing support for the demolition and reprovisioning plans.
