One of the most extraordinarily sad and disappointing chapters in Dallas Mavericks history is being revisited.
, former NBA forward Lamar Odom writes about his time with Dallas. He does not recall it fondly., Odom lashes out at his former team. He tells of disrespect he felt during his single season with the Mavericks. While he takes shots at the whole organization, Odom saves his most trenchant vitriol for Cuban.
For his part, the Mavericks’ owner doesn’t remember Odom’s stint in Dallas or their interactions in the same light.Odom’s time in Dallas wasn’t supposed to be fraught with the tension and animosity he describes. In fact, he was celebrated at first. The Mavericks touted him as the team’s signature off-season acquisition after the Lakers dealt him December 11, 2011.
On the court, Odom was a star with a Hollywood pedigree. Off the court, he was grieving and battling addiction. In April 2011, he attended the funeral of his 24-year-old cousin, who murdered in New York. The following day, the vehicle Odom was traveling in was involved in a car crash in which a 15-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed. Five year’s prior, he lost his six-month-old son to infant sudden death syndrome the morning after a night of partying.after the wreck.
His season unraveled quickly after that. The player that Odom once was, the player the Mavericks traded for, never manifested. When it was over, he had the worst statistical season of his career up to that point. He averaged 6.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting an abysmal 35.2%. According to Odom, the most disrespectful thing the organization did was to send him down to the Texas Legends, the Mavericks’ D-League affiliate in Frisco, Texas. “The move was solely meant to humiliate me,” Odom says. Then as the close of the season drew near, everything reached a tipping point.
