“I want to be very clear, Lakewood does a really good job with our dispatch for police and fire,” Mayor Meghan George said. “Our dispatchers are exceptional. My goal has always been to keep dispatch in Lakewood.'

That effort has made its way to Lakewood, where on Monday Mayor Meghan George introduced a communication to City Council about the issue.

The impetus behind recent changes in dispatch activity stems from the State of Ohio asking communities to reduce the number of PSAPs . The idea is for cities to consolidate dispatch centers or risk losing out on communications system funding. Something else at play regarding the reduction in local dispatch centers is currently pending Ohio House Bill 445, which the mayor said if approved would repeal the limits regarding communication centers.

“We don’t know what the future holds,” George said. “We have a new county commissioner coming, but we don’t know how they’re going to view this.
