'I've got some really huge decisions to make,' Lakesha Burton said of her potential challenge to Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters.

She won’t formally be a candidate until next week, however, and it’s not certain that she’ll complete the"I've got some really huge decisions to make between now and next week," Burton said Wednesday, describing a challenge against Waters as"a huge fight."

A statement of candidacy and forms identifying a campaign treasurer, deputy treasurer and the bank holding campaign funds were filed Tuesday at the. Burton said she'll be out of town before qualifying and submitted her paperwork to have it in place in case she decides to run. It’s not unheard of for hopefuls to file initial paperwork but not complete qualifying, which will require Burton to pay a $13,221 qualifying fee unless she presents 6,558 petitions signed by Duval County voters. Waters will have to complete the same process during qualifying, which will run from noon Monday to noon Friday, Jan. 13.

Burton, a Democrat, ran about 10 percentage points behind Waters in a special election in November to fill the joboutside Duval County in violation of a residency requirement.The spring election is to decide the seat for a four-year term starting July 1.for this year's election in November, days after his win at the polls.

Four other candidates were either eliminated or withdrew before the November election. None of them had filed Wednesday to run again this year.
