I would say the thing I was most impressed by, thinking back to my parents, was every time I asked to go to a kart track after school, I never remember them saying no. Even after them being at work all day. As a kid I had no clue [about how busy they were] but we would always go when I asked.Do you still race karts, and is that something to enjoy and take your mind off F1, or does it help to keep you sharp?I still enjoy karting. It’s definitely fun but I feel it’s beneficial.

Now I’m also involved in a local team. [Bottas is co-owner of top-division Finnish ice hockey team The Lahti Pelicans].National service is compulsory in Finland. What are your memories of that and do you think it helped with your motorsport career?It is mandatory for every male Finn. I was 18 when I started in September 2008 and was there for six months; I did the minimum amount of time because of my career. I was doing Formula Renault and about to start F3 at the time.

You also trained as a car mechanic. Has that knowledge helped you with understanding a race car and being able to feed back to the team on setup and vehicle dynamics?That was at school in Finland. I was more interested in cars than studying mathematics, so I studied to be a qualified car mechanic.

Next year I’ll get the AMG One from Mercedes [pictured below]. It’s unreal. I think about it, honestly, as an investment as well. It’s something really unique that I’m definitely going to drive, but I don’t want to drive too much because hopefully one day someone makes a good offer...I’m buying it myself, with no discount....
