MONTGOMERY — On the outside looking in, Lake Creek senior Ava Brown is a state champion, the reigning Texas Gatorade Softball Player of the Year and a MaxPreps National Player of the Year candidate.On the inside looking out, Brown is comfortable with who she is. She knows what makes her, what drives her. She knows what she wants.
Never afraid of being an outlier—really, who doesn’t crave a cherry snow cone on a simmering Texas day?—Brown is care-free in her own skin. And more than the 65-70 mile per hour fastball or effortless power swing, that is what defines one of the premier high school players, of any sport, in the nation.Brown, a University of Florida signee, is batting .477 with 62 RBIs and nine home runs with a .611 on-base percentage and .918 slugging percentage for the 42-1 Lions.
“I’ve used softball as an outlet through many things, and it’s like an escape for me,” Brown said. “It helps me get away from anything in my real life, whether it’s school, friendships, relationships, whatever. Softball is always the thing that’s been there for me, and if I’m ever struggling, I know I can resort to it. No matter how bad I’ve done or how bad I feel it’s done me.”Brown’s biological father left early in her life. Her stepfather, Ryan Potter, entered when she was four years old.
“But she’s just not that kid,” Kelly Potter said. “Yes, on the field, she’ll bulldog when she needs to, but if she hits a player, she’ll apologize. She doesn’t ever want to hurt anybody. She’s that type of kid.” Kelly and Ryan Potter appreciate the recognition their daughter has received because of her elite skill and ability. Brown enjoys it as well.
“Me being able to share my wisdom or anything I’ve learned with the youth, especially in this community, it’s the most rewarding thing you can get from this sport,” Brown said. “They literally don’t care if you do great or if you suck. They just want to see you. They want to hug you. They look at you and not what you do, even if what you do speaks very highly of you.”Michelle Rochinski said Brown has one of the best swings she’s ever seen from a teenager.
