The Black & Gold star forward, having set several MLS records before winning the MLS Cup in November, is focused on ‘more winning aspects’
Carlos Vela chose to join a club without history, let alone one defined by winning, when he signed with the Los Angeles Football Club.
To be fair, contributing into extra time of the championship represented a strong shift for Vela, who assisted on Jesus Murillo’s could-have-been game-winner in the 83rd minute with a sweeping corner kick at the near post. Prior to the Nov. 5 nail-biter at the previously named Banc of California Stadium, Vela had not played 90 minutes since the MLS All-Star break in early August.
So Vela spent more time working on himself during the downtime than he had after less successful seasons. Winning did not placate him. Instead it motivated him to “work on some specific things I was feeling were not right.” Using a personal trainer for the first time, Vela enhanced his mobility and “more winning aspects, like finishing the game stronger with more energy.”
“Now when you get older, you have more experience. You know how this sport works because it’s a team sport. You have to put in effort, but you also need the effort from other guys, so that you have to change your mind and have different things in your head and you try to focus in another way. But of course, I am always trying to do my best for me and also my team.”League play opens Feb. 25, with LAFC starting its title defense against the Galaxy at the Rose Bowl.
