Lady Susan Hussey's comments should stop us pretending royal incidents like these are anomalies ✒️ kubared for ipaperviews
The late Queen Elizabeth II and her former lady in waiting, Lady Susan Hussey at St Mary Magdalene Church, on the royal estate at Sandringham in Norfolk
This week, when one of the late Queen’s former ladies in waiting reportedly subjected domestic abuse charity campaigner, Ngozi Fulani, to, that question became even more pressing. Fulani, invited to the palace for her work with Sistah Space, claimed Lady Susan Hussey had greeted her by moving her hair in order to see her name badge – and relentlessly questioning her about where she “really came from”, despite her clearly stating she had been born in the UK.
But this incident has raised fresh questions about what is clearly a deeper issue within the institution: its blindspot to racism., stressed that although she felt the issue was an example of “prolonged racism”, it is “the institution that needs to be looked at”, rather than one specific person. I’m inclined to agree.
