Netflix has released a new adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and viewers have found it so saucy they have warned others not to “watch it with your mum.” An adaptation of the 1928 novel by D.H. Lawrence, it tells the tale of an emotional and physical romance between two people from polar opposite social classes.
The book was initially banned in several countries because of its explicit description of sex acts, and it was not until 1960 when an uncensored version was made available in the UK. It has since been adapted for film and TV many times, most notably a 1993 version starring Sean Bean, and in 2015 starring Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden.
Its latest iteration – starring The Crown’s Emma Corrin and Skins star Jack O’Connell – dropped on Netflix last week, and sees Connie Reid, whose life of wealth and privilege seems set as she takes the title of Lady Chatterley, meet and fall for gamekeeper Oliver Mellors. The pair embark on a series of secret trysts which lead Connie to a sensual and sexual awakening.
Since its release, viewers have flocked to social media to share their reactions. And while many were full of praise for the period drama’s cinematography and the actors’ performances in particular, many fans urged others to watch it alone to avoid and awkward moments with family members.On Twitter, @xtaline said: “So...Lady Chatterley’s Lover... Netflix. Don’t watch with your parents or kids.”
