💧 Between 2017 and 2021, sewage has overflowed directly into Scottish rivers and other water courses 54,289 times - the equivalent of almost 30 times per day
Scottish Liberal Democrat leader, Alex Cole-Hamilton, who the led the first ever Scottish Parliament debate on the issue of sewage discharge in October, added: “The true scale of this pollution is likely to be exponentially higher than the reported figures.
Simon Parsons, director for strategic customer service planning at Scottish Water, said: “We can be very proud in Scotland of the quality of our water environment, and we take our responsibility extremely seriously in protecting this, including improving sewer network performance and reducing spillage events.”
A Scottish Government spokesman said: “The Scottish Government takes the matter of sewage pollution very seriously and works closely with Sepa and Scottish Water to reduce its impacts on the water environment.
