Labour recorded a resounding victory in the battleground Rutherglen & Hamilton West by-election, earning a thumping majority of 9446 amid a political swing of more than 20 per cent from the SNP.

“Too many famlies now are struggling with the cost of living crisis and NHS waiting lists; after voting SNP for years you put your trust in me, and I’ll work to repay that trust.” Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, who accompanied Mr Shanks to the count, told Lanarkshire Live that the result was “a turning point for Scottish politics”; while UK party leader Sir Keir Starmer called it “seismic“.
