Sources close to Mayor Khan insisted the two had always had different positions on the issue, and suggested it would be wrong to read anything into the timing of Sir Keir’s speech coming days after the Mayor of London’s remarks.
“We have been clear for a long time what we want to do but I would suggest there is clarity in terms of our message,” they said. “The policy stuff is not brand new, the new element is us taking it to Johnson himself as a challenge to his deal. The step-change is that is it more buoyant.”One toldthey thought the policy would be “contentious” for those representing Remain-backing constituencies and complained there had been little consultation with backbenchers.
“Well look, we’re out of the EU. We’ve got to, and we will, make Brexit work and that’s what I’ve been setting out today,” he said.
