This is what fashions for femmes fleurs looked like in 1938.
from left to right:
1. Roses rambling in the flounce of Mainbocher’s velvet dress—the shade called “modest violet” 2. Rose-pink—what Schiaparelli calls “cameo-pink”—in a wool jacket with a skunk collar. 3. Roses bunched on the hip of Molyneux’s slipper satin dress—the sleeves pure leg-o’-mutton. 4. A rose of sequins on the chest of Mainbocher’s high-necked, long-sleeved velvet dress. Violets,5. Violet for morning—Molyneux’s wool suit with a medium violet jacket, deep violet skirt, light violet blouse 6.
Spring is showing itself in the buds on the trees outside my windows and in the happy faces of daffodils. There’s a feeling of the earth stretching its arms and smiling, inviting everyone to join in the fun. That has to be done at a distance this year as we all #stayhome in solidarity with the people on the front lines of the pandemic.
As far as I know, there are no restrictions on wearing rose-colored glasses; it’s romance that I’m craving as a break from reality and I unfailingly find it in the work of the French artist Christian “Bébé” Bérard who worked forduring the 1930s. His fluid, sinuous line is suggestive rather than didactic; he wasn’t one to connect the dots, but to conjure a mood as enticing and intangible as a trace of scent.
Bébé, as he was known, was sought-after, cosseted, feted. His talent was such that he was forgiven for his missed deadlines and disappearances. Ballard relates in her memoir, that the artist admitted that these absences were to detox from his opium addiction. The editor’s description of Bérard as a “pink-and-red angel” is suggestive of the soft airy touch that marks his drawing.which was dedicated to Autumn fashions, trousseaux, and featured a portfolio for limited incomes.
