In “end-of-line” cities like Long Beach, where Metro cleans its cars at night, lots of homeless exit but aren’t wanted.
The unhoused riders on LA Metro buses and trains are only half the problem. The county transit agency has learned that the other half — which may be more troublesome — is when these riders are forced to exit from the buses and trains after midnight.
A point in time survey conducted by Metro in late March identified a dozen end-of-line train stations, often located in residential areas, where unhoused riders exit and congregate generally between midnight and 3 a.m.Union Station, 137 people gathered; North Hollywood at the B Line Station, 112; 7th Street/Metro Center Station in downtown L.A.
Rail ridership was flat in the first quarter this year, remaining at 58% of the pre-pandemic level, Metro reported. Some of that ridership loss is because more people now work from home. Yet many believe the low ridership level is because potential riders don’t want the homeless on trains or at stations, and in addition, that potential riders are concerned about the spike in crimes reported on Metro’s system.Metro is contracting with L.A.
One bright spot was found in a survey of 321 homeless end-of-line riders. Sixty-four percent said they were willing and ready to be connected to services or housing, Jones reported. In an April 26 letter sent to Hahn and LA Metro’s board, the Wrigley Association said the neighborhood has historically been underserved and has fewer resources than other parts of Long Beach. “To burden a community that has little to provide for those who have nothing is unjust,” the association wrote.
