The festival moved to La Jolla Playhouse this year after its original home, San Diego Repertory Theatre, shut down in 2022.
When San Diego Repertory Theatre shut down last summer, many of its annual events were left without a home. But the Rep’s Latinx New Play Festival was rescued by the La Jolla Playhouse, which will present the sixth edition of the festival Oct. 27 through 29. The Latinx New Play Festival celebrates new theatrical work by Latinx playwrights from across the country.
Directed by festival founder Maria Patrice Amon, this is a comedic, bilingual, post-quarantine play. Five American Latina friends embark on a camping trip in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey for a bachelorette party. There they encounter two White “papi chulos” who are doing this camping thing right: with running water. The boys hatch a plan inspired by reality television in order to determine which of the femme-fatales they will save from deportation through marriage.
