After three-and-a-half days of jury deliberation, Kyle Rittenhouse, who shot three men — killing two — during protests in the summer of 2020, was found not guilty of all five charges.
Rittenhouse, an Illinois resident who drove to Kenosha, Wisconsin, with an AR-15-style weapon during protests following the August 2020 police shooting of Jacob Blake, claimed his killing of two men and shooting of a third were in self-defense. Rittenhouse killed Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, and shot Gaige Grosskreutz, 27, in the arm. Rittenhouse and the three men he shot are all white. After hearing the verdict, Rittenhouse burst into tears.
. “Today’s verdict means there is no accountability for the person who murdered our son. It sends the unacceptable message that armed civilians can show up in any town, incite violence, and then use the danger they have created to justify shooting people in the street. We hope that decent people will join us in forcefully rejecting that message and demanding more of our laws, our officials, and our justice system.
The prosecutors argued that Rittenhouse’s choice to leave his town and head to Kenosha with a weapon counters any narrative of self-defense.
