Not every coach has the requisite relationship with their players to understand their psychology and preferences in approaching the game of football, but Andeson is not like every coach. One of Vogel’s favorite stories was a prank Anderson pulled on the o-line and the rest of the Northwestern football team during the team’s 2020 season where the Wildcats went 7-2 and won the Citrus Bowl amidst the COVID-altered year. It started when head coach Pat Fitzgerald had already been pranking Anderson by messing with the connection between the offensive line’s game tape and the big screen inside the team’s indoor practice facility, where the o-line was regularly meeting.
Through it all, Anderson always emphasized one thing above all to his linemen—physicality, a quality that he believes has diminished throughout football and in the NFL with the reduction in contact practices and quantity of reps players have been put through. “About 80-85% of is the what-if scenarios,” said Anderson. “It’s not just the blanket, ‘hey what technique is this,’ or, ‘what block is this,’ stuff, it’s what happens when you’re in bad body position, what happens when a defense moves, what happens when something unexpected happens, and how can your eyes, your feet, and your technique save you from there.”
Vogel told TDN that the way Anderson taught pin-pull technique and how to perform double teams against opposing defensive linemen has stuck with him and is the technique he still uses now in the USFL. Anderson taught the post and drive technique to his players on double teams and specifically instructed them to target a defender’s ribs and hips in order to best move them on a double team.
Once again, the truth is not mutually exclusive like that, and above both fundamentals and raw athletic ability, Anderson values who each player is as a person above all, and how well they can communicate with those around them.
