Klein ISD rolled out a new transportation portal to let parents track their children’s bus routes. The SMART tag Parent Portal will be available 24/7 with real-time bus stop alerts so parents can see the bus’s location, estimated arrival times and delays.
“It really came down to trust and safety,” said John Fergerson, Klein ISD director of transportation. “Our parents are trusting us with students each day and we were just looking for a second layer of protection to ensure that we have delivered their children to the correct location.”The portal tracks bus routes using SMART tags provided to each child. The tags are used for several purposes including to check out library books, to buy lunch, and as a bus tracker.
“What it really does well for us is when we have those delays, we can send those messages out,” he added. “Maybe a bus is running late because a driver was running late that day and we want to let parents know that. We can just send a message out that it’s running late and they can be looking for that 10-minute notification at a different time.”
The SMART tag Parent Portal launched last weekend. As of Monday, over 900 parents had already registered, and the district hopes to see many more sign up.
