The Kings turned in a forecheck-fueled, four-goal first period that would have made their former coach Darryl Sutter proud had he been watching from the stands rather than the opposing bench as his Calgary Flames lost, 8-2, on Monday night at Crypto.com Arena.
Former Kings winger Tyler Toffoli and defenseman Noah Hanifin scored for Calgary. Jacob Markstrom made it through two periods before giving way to Dan Vladar on a night Calgary’s defense might sooner forget. It was another young King doing damage on the forecheck to create their second goal. Byfield barreled into burly defenseman Chris Tanev in the corner, quelling the breakout and winning back the puck to send a pass high for Doughty. He glided to the top of the left circle for a far-side goal through a Kopitar screen. It was Doughty’s third in four games after scoring three in 66 previous outings.
The Kings slipped back into a nasty habit, taking an offensive-zone penalty and the ensuing power play gave Calgary back a goal. Center Mikael Backlund stripped the puck from Doughty behind the Kings’ net and slid it to forward Elias Lindholm, who found Toffoli in front for a bang-bang goal. The former King is Calgary’s leader in points and goals .
