Houston’s flat third quarter let the Kings run away with a win over the Rockets on...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — As the Rockets and Kings traded baskets like they were at a flea market exchange, the game’s result seemed destined to come down to one question: Which team would decide to play defense first?Houston’s flat third quarter let the Kings run away with a 139-114 win over the Rockets on Friday night in the second of two games at Golden 1 Center.

Sacramento led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter before the Rockets chipped away with Jalen Green’s acrobatic efforts in addition to bench contributions from Garrison Mathews and Tari Eason. Despite letting the Kings shoot 42 percent on 3-pointers, the Rockets committed just five first-half turnovers and trailed 69-66 at the break.

By the start of the fourth quarter, frustrations had boiled over. Two players from each team — Mathews and Eason of Houston, Malik Monk and Chimezie Metu of Sacramento — were ejected following a scuffle that began between Mathews and Monk.Green led the Rockets with 27 points, but scored just two points in the second half. Jabari Smith Jr. also had 27 points, a career high, and led the team with eight rebounds. Alperen Sengun and Eric Gordon combined for 23 points and 13 assists.
