The most powerful message from the World Cup is that women can prosper in a world once inhabited exclusively by men

, with all its attendant hype and hoopla, prove to be little more than a glorious distraction in the dog days of summer?

A year ago, in the wake of the Lionesses’ victory in the European Championship, all 23 members of the squadto the then prospective prime ministers Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, urging them to help drive real change in the women’s game. “We want every young girl in the nation to be able to play football at school,” they said. “We are inspiring young girls to play football, only for many to end up going to school and not being able to play… we want their dreams also to come true.

In response, Rishi Sunak wrote that he would “launch a review of women’s football immediately if made prime minister”, and this turned out not to be hollow words. Earlier this year, his Government committed to providing equal access to all sports in PE for boys and girls in England, a minimum of two hours of PE a week and a substantial investment in school sports and after‑school activities, especially targeting girls.

And so we have a template. It is possible, by building on the popular impact of sporting triumph, to effect political change which, in turn, can transform the outcomes of young lives. Notwithstanding their, this particular pride of Lionesses has the momentum to encourage further forward strides. But this cannot be a one-dimensional aspiration. Yes, it’s important that girls and boys have equal access to the sports they want to play, and that women’s football should get the administrative and financial support it deserves, but the horizons must be wider than that.
