Kindland challenged 59 municipal mayors across Northeast Ohio to come up with innovative ways to show acts of kindness in their Mayors’ Challenge for Kindness. The City of Maple Heights and its Mayor Annette Blackwell decided on something right away, paving (and lighting) the way for others to follow.

Each week, reporter Peter Chakerian will be taking a look at the people, initiatives and organizations across Greater Cleveland who are walking the talk in making the region a better place. This week’s Kindland profile was nothing short of illuminating.
The city stepped into the challenge, vowing to do acts of kindness every month to inspire residents to do the same. One result was the city’s February 2023 “Light the Way” campaign, where Maple Heights residents — parents and non-parents alike — would leave street-facing exterior lights on during the week.
Blackwell said the response to that campaign is ongoing — and welcomed by the parents of those kids, too. Blackwell said that a big part of that win comes from breaking down barriers with inclusivity and consistency. “Being the same person on Monday at 8 a.m., Friday at 5 p.m. and at your weekend barbecue,” she told the audience
“You have to show up as your authentic self,” Blackwell said, citing Maple Heights’ 25,000 residents, 150+ employees and the responsibility surrounding delivering city services to and through them.
