Loved ones of Billy Moore wept as James Ireland, 41, was found guilty of his murder
The family of a man stabbed to death on his own doorstep by someone he had earlier spoken to and hugged wept as his killer was convicted of murder.
The city's top judge addressed the jury after Ireland - who wore an open-collared white shirt - was led down to the cells, telling them: "A tragic set of circumstances - someone has lost their life and the defendant has ruined his, all over something of nothing. Just utterly tragic." Billy’s partner said: “Billy was a kind, caring and fun-loving man, who was always making me laugh. Losing him will affect me for the rest of my life and I will struggle knowing I will never see him again.
Mr Moore grabbed his assailant around the neck, but was unable to stop the attack. Ireland left him bleeding to death on the floor, then disposed of the murder weapon and his bloodstained clothing before handing himself into the police two days later. He maintained that he pulled the blade from the deceased's waistband at this stage and had used it to halt his assault when he "feared for his life".
Speaking following the case, Senior Investigating Officer DI Eli Atkinson from Cheshire Police said: “Ireland disposed of the knife and his blood-stained clothing, which was never found, and kept a low profile before eventually handing himself in with a concocted story – a story which we were able to disprove as we made our enquiries.
