The irony, of course, is that Kendall is also a killer in the most literal sense. No-one has forgotten the end of season one when he drove, drunk and on drugs, straight into a river, leaving the waiter in the passenger seat to die. The guilt, minimised by Logan at every turn, has haunted Kendall ever since and has long been the motivation for almost anything he does, from brutally dismantling Vaulter on his dad’s orders to drinking so much in Italy he almost drowned .
His softness was exposed when his long-time assistant Jess tried to schedule a meeting to talk about her resignation. Were this a problem presented to Logan, he would have replied with a succinct and expected “f**k off”, but Kendall’s self-respect demands answers. “Can I ask why?” he ventured with a bruised ego. “It’s kind of ridiculous. I’m sorry but I’ve given you extraordinary access. You’re being dumb.” Another temper tantrum, reminding us that he is not and never will be Logan Roy.
Kendall’s ascension to the top is almost inevitable now. In next week’s finale, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him take his place at Logan’s desk as the sole CEO of Waystar Royco. But the cost will be immense. “Life isn’t nice. It’s contingent,” he said to Hugo in the graveyard.
