But Suleiman, who has owned Diva for seven years, estimates his store is still being targeted at least four times a week – with swiped items ranging from lip glosses to £100 hair extensions. The former Scotland Yard detective, who provides a private prosecution service to stores, told the paper a decision made by the government to downgrade thefts of less than £200 meant it was worth no one’s time or money to prosecute shoplifters.
“A few months ago, a woman stole something and we told her to give it back. She gave the item back but threw every item off the shelf onto the floor. We lost more than £100 from the broken things.There were 342,343 shoplifting offences reported in England and Wales over the last year, an increase of 67,267 compared to the year before.
“When you know someone is trying to distract you and you’re on your own, you can use it as a fall back.” The problem has become so bad that staff have been forced to keep coffee in a separate area and only display one pack of laundry pods at a time.“When we come to check our stock, there’s stuff missing all the time. If we leave the aisle [by the door] with no staff members on, they will grab a basket, fill it and do one – they'll even take the basket too.“The [shoplifters] we see are not your typical shopper. They are usually the ones who sell it for half price on a street corner.
