Kia's SUV and futuristic sedan concepts reveal the brand's multi-pronged EV strategy, but the EV5 might not be coming to our shores.
back in March in the form of a rendered design concept. It offered an insight to the next phase of Kia's assault on the EV market, as a boxy mid-sized SUV featuring reverse-hinged rear doors and an impossibly thin front light signature; the former of which, we suspected, wouldn't make it to production … we were more hopeful for the latter.
Interestingly, the EV5's specific version of E-GMP will run revised electronic architecture at 400V, half the capacity of the EV6 and EV9's ultrafast-charging-capable 800V. Kia is doing this, we presume, to keep costs down. There will be three different EV5s. The standard front-wheel-drive model will be equipped with a 64-kWh battery powering a 214-hp motor. This configuration should have a 329-mile maximum range on the Chinese testing cycle.
Many of the brand's great technological features will find their way into EV5, from the i-Pedal system for effective regenerative braking and one-pedal driving, to the revised 'HVAC 2.0' controls found in EV9, which replace the fiddly system in the EV6 that requires a button press to switch between entertainment and climate controls.
The EV5's price reflects this strategy. Kia will place the EV5 between the between $35,000 and $50,000 price points. It'll price the eventual production versions of the EV3 and EV4 in that range, as well, which Kia thinks will put that at the ideal tipping point for EV sales. In addition to the production EV5, we were treated to previews of two all-new design concepts: the EV4 and EV3.
