Key Astros return from World Baseball Classic, eager to compete in WBC again, despite injury risk

Jeremy Pena of Team Dominican Republic in action during World Baseball Classic Pool D Workout Day at loanDepot park on March 10, 2023 in Miami, Florida.WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The big league clubhouse at the Astros spring training complex was a little more lively Friday morning with the return of players who had spent the past week about 70 miles south in Miami representing the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.

Peña, who hadn't played in a game since Tuesday was thrust right into the Astros' lineup against the Nationals on Friday afternoon with manager Dusty Baker saying he planned to get him a couple at-bats. "Everything’s good, my arm's feeling good, my stuff is good," Neris said."Just happy to be with the team. Now, it's time to focus on the season."Puerto Rico's win that eliminated the Dominican Republic, there has been some question about the wisdom of major leaguers risking injury in a high-intensity tournament right before the start of the season."It’s unfortunate that that happened to Díaz or any player, but it’s part of our game," Peña said.

"Any time you have a chance to represent your country and your family, it’s a great experience," Neris said."You never want to say no."
