Kevin Harvick teed off on NASCAR’s slow safety response and the danger of the new Next Gen car Saturday. “Safety has to fall before cost — and it doesn’t right now.'
Harvick said he started asking questions about how the fire occurred and why everything melted; he was told some of the parts in the affected area were “not 100 percent fire-resistant.” He said Stewart-Haas Racing presented a stainless coating in July after Chase Briscoe’s car caught on fire, and it was rejected until this week, when NASCAR issued a technical bulletin to make changes.
Though NASCAR’s safety directive this week addressed the fire problem several drivers have experienced this year, Harvick believes the technical changes came “way too late.” The mere fact NASCAR had a plan to fix the fire issue was proof to Harvick something was already in the works but simply slow to be implemented.
NASCAR has a drivers’ advisory council, which was revitalized earlier this year, and officials met with council leader Jeff Burton and five Cup drivers for two hours this week. NASCAR also speaks with Burton, the go-between with the drivers and officials, on a daily basis.“Safety has to fall before cost — and it doesn’t right now,” he said. “… The biggest concern right now is you have another Kurt Busch situation.
