Republican Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin is trailing behind Democratic challenger Andy Beshear. But Bevin is refusing to concede.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Democrat Andy Beshear leads Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, a Republican, by a 5,333-vote margin with all precincts reporting in the state — but Bevin is refusing to concede, telling supporters Tuesday night that the race was too close to call.
“If you win, they are going to make it like, ho hum,” Trump told the crowd at the Monday night rally for Bevin. “And if you lose, they are going to say Trump suffered the greatest defeat in the history of the world. You can't let that happen to me!" But another major theme was Bevin’s at-times abrasive personality. Over the course of his first term, Bevin courted controversy that contributed to his poor poll numbers. He said he intentionally infected each of his nine children with chicken pox, rather than have them vaccinated. He blamed the accidental shooting of a 7-year-old girl on organized teacher sick-outs.
Tuesday’s races lack the coast-to-coast scope of last year’s midterms, but President Donald Trump has put his political capital on the line in Kentucky and Mississippi, heightening the national stakes a year before Trump seeks reelection. Democrats in both states are running stronger campaigns than the recent presidential voting history there would suggest, but Trump has held rallies Bevin and Reeves in the closing days of the races to give them a boost.
