Kenny Smith tells wild behind-the-scenes story of Vernon Maxwell leaving Rockets during title run
, Maxwell chatted with former Rockets teammate Kenny Smith, who told the Maxwell story that isn’t often highlighted: The night “Mad Max” left the 1995 Rockets in the middle of the playoffs.
The second half of the 1995 season, a year after Maxwell and Rockets won their first championship, was a rough one. Maxwell was suspended 10 games forduring a game. During Maxwell’s suspension, the Rockets traded for Clyde Drexler, who cut into Maxwell’s playing time. “Vernon is so upset because he missed the shot, he’s not warm, he hasn’t played,” Smith says on the podcast produced by Bovada's media network.“One time I said, ‘Yo, you’re gonna have to pay me extra every time I have to go get Max,’” Smith said. “Any fight he got in, any argument he got in, it was ‘Kenny, go get him.’ That was my name. I thought it wasn’t Kenny Smith, I thought it was Kenny Go Get Him.
“Like left where? Left to eat?,” Smith recalls saying into the phone. “He’s like, ‘No, he left the team. He said he’s going home.’ And I’m like, 'And, you didn’t stop him?’ I’m screaming at . I’m actually cursing him out.”
