Keir Starmer’s mission could be held hostage by the bitterness growing in the left of his party ✒️ LOS_Fisher for ipaperviews
In one sense this is classic B“planner”lairite tactics, recalling the endless targets and league tables that became a running joke under New Labour. But it is also a notably down-to-earth pitch, explained in part by an awareness among Starmer’s allies that Labour is set to inherit challenging national finances if they clinch the next election.
The fringe faction that should worry senior Labour figures is the Socialist Campaign Group, founded by Tony Benn in the 1980s, which is made up of around 30 Labour MPs. It comprises veteran socialists like John McDonnell, Diane Abbott and Ian Lavery; Corbyn-era frontbenchers such as Richard Burgon, Dawn Butler and Rebecca Long-Bailey; and newer rising stars on the left like Zarah Sultana and Nadia Whittome.
So far Starmer has demonstrated his iron-clad will when it comes to left-wing colleagues’ dissent over foreign policy – taking a zero tolerance approach to anti-western narratives that falsely equate Nato’s conduct with Russia’s. That much became clear last February when 11 Labour MPs were warned they faced losing the whip after signing a statement about the Ukraine invasion that lambasted Nato. Tellingly, all 11 withdrew their name from the missive..
