Kay Lopez tapped into her Latinas Poderosas community to come up with a list of gifs, then she created them.
Kay Lopez has been connecting with a Latinx community on Instagram for over two years now. With her Latinas Poderosas platform she celebrates and encourages Latinas, their accomplishments, and all the gaps they are working to fill. It’s her native uses of the social media platform that made it easy for her to spot a gap in the space — there was a lack of Latinx representation in the gif offerings on Instagram.
Lopez’s hope is that the gifs, the work she executes daily with Latinas Poderosas, and the work of others in the Latinx space will allow for Latinas to see themselves represented in spaces they haven’t normally been. It also helped that right before being laid-off, more and more Lopez’s colleagues started questioning why she wasn’t creating something of her own with her skillset.
