We chat with UpHere stars Katie Finneran and Andréa Burns about the challenges that come with transitioning from live musicals to a pre-recorded hulu series:
Now available to stream on Hulu, Up Here is an eight-episode romantic comedy based on the 2015 stage musical by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. The streaming series takes place in 1999 and centers around a woman named Lindsay who moves to New York for a fresh start. When Lindsay meets Miguel, an instant connection forms, and it soon becomes clear that she's not the only one whose past is dictating their future.
Finneran and Burns chat exclusively with Screen Rant about their characters in Up Here, discussing the challenges that come with transitioning from live theater to a pre-recorded series. Katie Finneran: That's a better story, but I went to college with him. I went to college with Billy. Does that count? We should stop there.Katie Finneran: You want to listen to everything Billy Porter says. You both come from musical theater backgrounds, so what are the biggest adjustments you have to make when you're doing a live performance versus filming a pre-recorded series?
Katie Finneran: I kept saying, "I breathed in the wrong place. I need another take. I need another take!" It'll be like two in the morning. It was really hard. So I apologize to all the judgy energy I put out to those people lip synching. Forgive me, everyone, if I'm not great at it. Katie Finneran: These songs are so joyous. I don't know what it is about Kristen and Bobby Lopez, I don't know what kind of magic they're drinking, but they keep writing these songs that make you feel excited and happy—filled with good chemicals. I love their songs. I love all of their songs.
Andréa Burns: My mother. She would say, "Are you going to leave the house without lipstick? I don't think you can leave the house without lipstick."
