Opinion: Karen Bass’ homelessness plan is off to a terrible start
Newly elected Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass wasted no time in declaring a state of emergency on homelessness last Monday. This week, her new “Inside Safe” program begins.
This was the mayor’s answer: “What we have found in the community organizations that we’re bringing in to do this work is that you can get 95% of the people housed. People will go. It takes a while. You have to do outreach.” About half the people experiencing unsheltered homelessness would accept “interim housing with access to services, shared housing or safe camping.” Around 80% would accept “a private room in a shelter or hotel, a permanent stay in a motel- or hotel-like setting, or permanent housing.”
For more math-is-fun policy proposals, read the report just released by the Corporation for Supportive Housing and the California Housing Partnership. The groups calculate that the state must spend $96.9 billion on a 12-year plan in order to end homelessness by 2035.
