NHL: Goalie Kaapo Kahkonen made his third straight start for the San Jose Sharks on Thursday against the Florida Panthers
San Jose Sharks goalie Kaapo Kahkonen had another strong start Thursday but didn’t get the type of offensive support necessary to earn a third straight victory.
Eric Staal scored two empty-net goals with less than two minutes left in regulation time to help seal the win for Florida. Kahkonen had made a combined 71 saves in Sharks wins over Pittsburgh on Jan. 28 and Tampa Bay on Tuesday, giving him back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Then after a failed clearing attempt by Karlsson inside the Sharks’ zone, the puck found its way to Eetu Luostarinen, who sent a puck toward the net that Reinhart redirected past Kahkonen for his 19th goal of the season with 40 seconds left before intermission.With Radim Simek still not able to come off injured reserve, the Sharks recalled Nick Cicek from the Barracuda to give them a seventh defenseman for at least the remainder of the road trip.
