Parallels were drawn with Woolworths
We often read about the crisis facing Britain's high streets but to actually see evidence of it yourself, you could do worse than walk around Worksop's Priory Centre. The shopping precinct section of the Bassetlaw town has a history stretching back decades, having recently been home to big-name brands including M&S, Peacocks and Pandora.
Ultimately, it seems Wilko is simply more vulnerable to these existential problems than many of its rivals. Some commentators have already called Wilko the Woolworths of the present economic crisis, and there are indeed several parallels. Up against such challenges, the warning signs have been coming thick and fast over the last few years. It posted a loss of £36.8 million in the year to January 2022, with new CEO Mark Jackson being brought in last December as refinancing talks continued.
