That masterful scene is perhaps the most concise encapsulation of Donna’s character. She’s pained and childlike and deeply vulnerable, but when she feels Carmy babying her, she transforms in front of our eyes into someone steely and entirely impervious. “Do we have a problem?” she whispers at him, and stares into his eyes, smirking slightly in a way that’s enough to make your hair stand on end. In this moment, she’s incredibly frightening, almost monstrous, but also inescapably real.
When she finally walks into the dining room, Donna is met with applause, but when she begins to break down, Nat makes the mistake of asking her, once again, if she’s okay. Cue another round of screaming , smashing plates and storming out, after which everyone assumes the storm has passed. But then, like the wildly unpredictable force of nature she is, Donna drives a car into the house. The shot of her laughing as Mikey tries to open the car door is truly haunting.
Curtis, of course, reappears in the final episode of season two, in the devastating scene in which she comes to the opening of The Bear, but can’t make herself go inside. Good though it is, I don’t think the show needed it – her work was already done.
So, in short, I’m raising a butter-smeared glass of red wine to Curtis and counting down to her Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy speech. Surely, no one has ever worked this hard for a Guest Star Emmy before or had a more profound impact on the show they’ve been nominated for.
