But in 2011, just three Britons who had played on the winning team in the Ashes were recognised.
Labour’s shadow of state for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Lucy Powell said: “To not recognise the entire team in the New Year’s Honours, is not only against expectation but is out of sync with previous sporting victories, and another example of the lack of profile and respect given to the women’s game.
She said: “It’s an incredible honour. I’m just trying to take it in and its enormity. I recognise that I’m one of very few women in athletics that have received a damehood. I’m just so proud and incredibly beside myself.”And the hugely popular commentator and ex-player Chris Kamara, 65, also received an MBE for his charity and anti-racism work.
