A new study found that some of these so-called non-coding sections of genetic material may be important signaling molecules in cancers of the esophagus.

A study, recently published in the journal Gastroenterology, demonstrated that long non-coding sequences of RNA between genes- previously thought to have no function- were active both in cancer cells but also in healthy cells that were at high risk for becoming cancerous. CLEVELAND, Ohio — If you unraveled all the DNA in a single cell it would stretch over 6 feet long. Include the DNA in all your cells combined and it spans the width of the solar system—twice.

The question of just what the other 99% of our genetic material is doing has perplexed scientists for decades. Finally, researchers at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have uncovered some answers. , recently published in the journal Gastroenterology, demonstrated that long non-coding sequences of RNA between genes were active both in cancer cells but also in healthy cells that were at high risk for becoming cancerous.
