Hiding my transgender feelings deprived my parents of the opportunity to support and guide me through my adolescence

It’s easy to imagine a child who adopts a cross-gender identity. We might envision a little boy or girl who doesn’t fit in with the stereotypes of their sex, and who dramatically excels once affirmed as their preferred gender.

Compared with many other childhood identities, a cross-gender identity is instantly evident to everyone you meet. Every teacher you have and every classmate you interact with will know your gender identity because it’s something you literally wear on your face. Backing this identity out once social standing has been established can be incredibly intimidating because there is social momentum to keep moving forward.

I was a child when I came to understand my own transgender feelings. I was deeply ashamed, and I didn’t want my parents to find out at any cost. By hiding this from my family, I lived a double life and refined the art of lying to them. In turn, my parents were deprived of the opportunity to support and guide me through my adolescence. That division only grew over time.
