Josh Brolin grew up knowing men like Royal Abbott, the laconic rancher he plays in “Outer Range.”

Brolin earned an Oscar nomination for 2008's “Milk” and acclaim for his work in other films, including the George W. Bush presidential biopic “W” and “No Country for Old Men.” In 2020, he reached deep into his screen past to join his castmates from 1985's “Goonies” in a virtual reunion for pandemic-relief charity.
“The best thing with working with great directors is you're protected, because they know how to cut together performances, they know what to throw in the trash. They know about the clearest line of storytelling," Brolin said. Royal Abbott has a granddaughter , not the case with Brolin. He admitted that hearing his character addressed as “Grandpa” took him aback, especially given a scene in “Dune” in which Oscar Isaac's Leto calls Brolin's Gurney “old man.”
“I've been extremely lucky in the last 15 years. I usually find that the ego comes from an experience or this power-play thing, and I don’t see how that lends to the work at all,” he said.
