We sat down with metronomy's Joseph Mount to talk about the band's new album, fatherhood, working with Robyn and more. Read the interview:
, you wanted to make a masterpiece. And then you said you wouldn’t try to do that anymore, and you took a different approach onWith something like, that’s how I was thinking: “I want to make a classic album.” And I remember at the time,had come out just as I was mixing my record. I remember thinking, “This is so cool to try to do this, to try and craft something like that.” I guess the weird thing was with that record in the end, it became a lot of peoples’ favorite Metronomy record.
Between the last album and this one, you started writing for others, particularly Robyn. What was it like switching between writing for others and yourself? It was always happening. I write with other people. It’s going from helping someone else realize their own thing to doing my stuff again. The biggest example was the Robyn record and spending that time with her and being someone who had to be supportive and encouraging. The thing about me is when I’m working on my own, there’s no one sitting there and being like, “This is wicked!” I don’t have that kind of encouraging person.
Yeah a bit. It’s like looking at an old school photo. Even though then you would have felt ugly, you look back and you’re like, “Oh, I looked so good!” I feel like my voice sounds super awkward and weird in a way, but when I was making it, I remember being in my early 20s and not having a care in the world. The only thing I cared about was making that classic album!
