UAB's Jordan “Jelly” Walker finishes with a game-high 26 points in win over Jacksonville and continues to lead the nation in scoring average.

Eric Gaines throws down a house-raising dunk in UAB's 98-47 exhibition win over Mississippi College, Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022, at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala. When the full-court offense for the UAB basketball team is having a hard time getting going, it can always rely on its tack-like defense to conjure up a few free baskets while forcing its own scoring droughts.

Jacksonville is coached by Jordan Mincy, brother of UAB basketball legend and ring of honor inductee Jerome Mincy. Jordan “Jelly” Walker finished with a game-high 26 points, on 10-of-24 shooting overall and 6-of-13 from beyond the arc, and added 4 rebounds and 3 assists, while giving up only 2 turnovers. He continues to lead the nation in scoring average, posting 24.8 ppg in six contests this season.

“We came out slow and the second half we had to adjust,” Gaines said. “Make open shots, finish through contact, those type of things. Moving forward, we got to be much better. More edged up and tighter in the things that we do.” UAB struggled early on offense, opening the first half shooting 5-of-18 from the field, but dominated the rebounding battle to keep within striking distance. The Blazers used runs of 12-2 and 10-2 to take a late 28-21 lead and closed out on a 9-0 run to build a double-digit advantage heading into the halftime break.
