Thompson scored 34 points during the match against China, the most of any volleyball player from either the men's or women's competitions so far.

Thompson was praised by hundreds of other social media users following her dominant performance against China on Tuesday as many people claimed that she is the best volleyball player at the games.

China's loss to Team USA was their second so far this tournament after they fell to a straight sets defeat in their first match of the games against Turkey, who are ranked just behind them 4th in the world. Team USA won bronze at the 2016 Olympics and will be hoping to win the gold this year after starting strongly in the tournament with two straight sets victories.

They play again on Thursday in another preliminary match against Turkey, while China will face the Russian Olympic Committee as they still search for their first win. China's Zhu Ting spikes the ball past USA's Jordan Thompson and Haleigh Washington in the women's preliminary round pool B volleyball match between China and USA during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Ariake Arena in Tokyo on July 27, 2021.
